So yesterday, after seeing Remember Me with KFM I felt the need to keep the movie-watching going. So I stopped at my friendly neighborhood RedBox and rented New Moon (to view for the 3rd time...don't judge me), Up in the Air (I love George Clooney) and Ice Castles (its a remake of the original which I loved...again. No judging).
**SIDENOTE** I enjoyed seeing Robert Pattinson outside of the whole Twilight world. I think he could actually be a legit actor...Remember Me was....good. The ending was just very shocking. Imagine you're just standing around and then all of a sudden a soccer ball smacks you in the face--that's Remember Me. I'm still not even sure if I'm ready to talk about it. But if you don't get to see it in theaters its DEFINITELY worth the rental.
So. Up in the Air was an amazing movie and George Clooney was incredible in it. He was charming and restrained and pained and a lot of other things too. It was such a quirky and enjoyable little film and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I won't give much of the film away but here's the general plot: George Clooney is Ryan Bingham a part-time motivational speaker (his topic? "You don't need people") full-time fire-er. He fires people for a living and needless to say business is booming in our terrible economy. He travels like 300+ days a year and his apartment looks more like a hotel room. He has no human connections...with anyone. Not even his own family. A sad existence? Not for Ryan. He loves it. He enjoys the airports, the airplanes, the hotels, the lack of connection. His ultimate goal is to clock 10 million frequent flier miles because apparently something special happens when you do so...
Its incredible because after watching this film about a guy who flies around the world, enjoying the lonely, you're left with a strong urging to run outside and scream at the top of you lungs: "I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE!" That's how I felt. In that moment, I felt very 24. I felt the need to know and understand my life RIGHT NOW and I began to panic: What if I'm always like 6+ hours from my best friends? What if I never get married? What if my career becomes my life? What if I never give my Mom grandkids? Who's going to take care of me when I'm old and gray? What if no one ever really gets me?
And then I decided maybe that's the point of the movie--you see this guy who's 40+ who could've had the wife/kids thing and chose not to go that route and it makes you ask yourself, "Could I live like that?" And when the answer is a resounding "no" it makes you wanna get off your butt and TRY. Try to make human connections that mean something. It makes you wanna cut the fat and superficiality out of your life and hold on to those few extraordinary things. It makes you wanna put on a little mascara and lip gloss before you go to the grocery store--hey you never know! It makes you wanna find someone who wants to spend this life with you.
Amazing stuff.
